Five African footballers set for their international debuts in 2026-27

The first international break of the 2026-27 season will give five emerging African players the chance to make their senior national-team debuts.

The continent’s coaches have combined continuity with a willingness to introduce new players, with Abdellah Ouazane, Alaa Bellaarouch, Malang Sarr, Malick Yalcouye and Patrick Zabi all receiving their first call-ups.

Abdellah Ouazane – Morocco

The 17-year-old attacking midfielder has made a strong impression with Ajax Amsterdam’s youth teams and caught the attention of Morocco manager Mohamed Ouahbi.

Ouazane has already produced one goal and three assists for the first team at the start of the season. His creativity between the lines offers Morocco an option against defensive opponents who sit deep.

Ouahbi is expected to use Morocco’s two 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Gabon and Lesotho to give the teenager his first minutes and assess his ability to beat defenders in tight spaces.

Alaa Bellaarouch – Morocco

Alaa Bellaarouch has been rewarded for establishing himself as the number one goalkeeper at FC Dinamo in Romania.

The 3 clean sheets he has recorded at the beginning of the domestic campaign have helped convince Mohamed Ouahbi to make him the latest addition to Morocco’s goalkeeping hierarchy.

Bellaarouch’s performances on his line and his distribution provide the Atlas Lions with another dependable option. He could make his debut in the second match of the international break, giving him an opportunity to challenge Yassine Bounou for a place in goal.

Malang Sarr – Senegal

At 27, Malang Sarr has finally completed his change of sporting nationality and will represent Senegal.

The defender had become an important figure at RC Lens in recent seasons and has quickly become an established starter with his new club in Saudi Arabia. That form persuaded new Senegal manager Patrick Vieira to include him as he looks to strengthen the defence.

Sarr can operate either centrally or at left-back, giving Senegal valuable tactical flexibility during their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. He could feature in either of the two fixtures during this international window against Mozambique or Ethiopia.

Malick Yalcouye – Ivory Coast

Brighton midfielder Malick Yalcouye is one of the notable surprises in new Ivory Coast manager Herve Renard’s squad.

The 20-year-old has made an encouraging start to the season in England, scoring 2 goals and putting in energetic performances in midfield. Renard is looking to use his ability to win possession to improve the Elephants’ transition into attack.

Yalcouye could make his first appearance in the opening match of the break against Ghana, potentially operating as an impact substitute.

Patrick Zabi – Ivory Coast

Patrick Zabi’s move to Paris FC this summer represents the next step in his career. Although his start with PFC has been quiet, Herve Renard has rewarded the 19-year-old for his outstanding form at Reims in recent seasons.

The midfielder is expected to add pace and directness to Ivory Coast’s midfield. His dribbling allows him to unsettle defenders, although he faces competition for a regular place.

Zabi’s ability to influence matches from the bench could prove useful in the Elephants’ two fixtures at the start of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
