Christian Kofane to return against Ivory Coast

Cameroon striker Christian Kofane is in contention to return to action when the Indomitable Lions face Ivory Coast in an international friendly at the Ebimpe Olympic Stadium on Saturday, October 3.

The Bayer Leverkusen forward picked up a minor injury during Cameroon’s opening match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Comoros on September 24 in Garoua.

Kofane started the encounter but was unable to continue after the break, forcing Cameroon to make a change at half-time during their 3-1 victory.

Subsequent medical examinations revealed that the 20-year-old had suffered a minor strain. Although the injury was not considered serious, it ruled him out of Cameroon’s second AFCON qualifying fixture against Congo in Brazzaville.

Kofane’s absence was a setback for Cameroon, particularly after his involvement in the opening victory, but his recovery has now provided a boost to head coach David Pagou.

The young forward has resumed training with the Cameroon squad in Abidjan as preparations continue for the friendly against the Elephants.

His return to full training means Pagou could include him in the squad for Saturday’s encounter, with the possibility of handing him a starting role if he is deemed fit enough.

A starting appearance would represent a quick return for Kofane after spending several days on the sidelines and would also give the Cameroon technical team an opportunity to assess his fitness ahead of the next competitive assignments.

Cameroon will be looking to use the Ivory Coast friendly to further assess their squad and build momentum as they continue preparations for the remainder of the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.

For Kofane, the match could provide an opportunity to regain his rhythm and prove that he has fully recovered from the strain that forced him to miss the clash against Congo.

The Leverkusen attacker will, however, be carefully managed by the technical and medical teams, with his long-term fitness likely to remain a priority as Cameroon prepare for the demanding fixtures ahead.
