Decisive snub: Spain declines support for Morocco’s finalissima proposal

Spain have reportedly declined to back Morocco’s bid to stage the upcoming Finalissima against Argentina, as uncertainty continues to surround the venue for the high-profile clash.

The match, which will see Spain face reigning world champions Argentina, had initially been scheduled for 27 March at Lusail Stadium in Doha, Qatar.

However, the fixture is now expected to be moved because of the war in the Middle East, prompting fresh discussions over an alternative host.

According to Reuters, London has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Doha, with talks between the relevant governing bodies ongoing and a final decision anticipated soon.

The English capital is viewed as the frontrunner as organisers seek a neutral and suitable venue for the encounter.

Other options have been considered but largely ruled out.

Madrid was among the proposed hosts, yet Argentina rejected the Spanish capital.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) is said to favour a neutral setting rather than granting Spain home advantage for the one-off contest.

Morocco was also put forward, highlighting its newly built Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium as a potential stage for the match.

However, Spain reportedly refused to support Morocco’s candidacy.

The decision is understood to be linked to broader competition between the two nations, as both are involved in discussions related to hosting the 2030 World Cup final.

The development is likely to generate debate given the political and sporting sensitivities involved.

Another possible venue, Miami, was not considered a realistic option for the scheduled period.

The city is already committed to hosting the international tennis tournament, the Masters 1000, during the same timeframe.

London would not be a new setting for the Finalissima.

The previous edition in 2022 took place in the English capital, where Argentina defeated Italy 3-0.

With the date approaching and logistical concerns mounting, attention now turns to an official announcement that will determine where Spain and Argentina meet in one of the calendar’s most anticipated international fixtures.
