FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers: Zambia edge Burundi 2-1 to take advantage into second leg
Zambia secured a 2-1 victory over Burundi on Friday in the first leg of their tie in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
The Junior Copper Queens broke the deadlock in the 44th minute when Chishala Mfunte finished off a quick attacking move to stun the home crowd. Burundi fought back after the interval, with Esperance Habonimana levelling the score in the 70th minute.
However, Zambia had the final say as Ruth Muwowo struck late in the 88th minute to secure a crucial win on the road.
The result gives Zambia a narrow advantage heading into the decisive return leg at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on September 27, 2025. A positive result would see them advance to the next round of qualifiers.
Burundi, on the other hand, will need nothing short of a strong performance away from home to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
