FIFA shines spotlight on Argentina’s extraordinary 13-minute comeback against Egypt

The official Spanish-language World Cup account of world football’s governing body, FIFA, has revisited one of the standout moments of the 2026 World Cup: Argentina’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Egypt in the last 16.

The account posted a photograph from the match on Friday, showing Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez heading the decisive third goal past Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir. Egypt defender Yasser Ibrahim can be seen watching the ball as Fernandez completes an extraordinary late comeback for the holders.

The image was accompanied by the caption: “From 0-2 to 3-2 in 13 minutes.”

The match took place on 7 July at Atlanta Stadium in the United States, with Argentina entering the knockout tie as the reigning world champions. For much of the game, however, the holders appeared to be heading out of the tournament.

Egypt took control after Yasser Ibrahim opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Mostafa Ziko then doubled the Pharaohs’ advantage in the 67th minute, leaving Argentina two goals behind with only 12 minutes of normal time remaining.

Argentina’s response was sudden and emphatic. The South American side scored three times in the closing stages to overturn the deficit and secure a place in the next round.

Cristian Romero began the revival in the 79th minute, reducing the gap with a headed goal. Lionel Messi then brought Argentina level four minutes later, striking powerfully to make it 2-2.

The comeback was completed in the second minute of added time. Fernandez rose to head the winning goal past Shobeir, sealing a 3-2 victory and preventing Egypt from completing a major upset.

The result remains one of the most dramatic matches of the tournament so far, with Argentina recovering from a two-goal disadvantage in just 13 minutes. FIFA’s post focused on the speed and scale of the turnaround, highlighting the sequence that transformed the last-16 tie from an apparent Egyptian victory into a memorable Argentina win.

Argentina’s decisive spell came after Egypt had appeared to have the contest under control. The Pharaohs’ two-goal lead had been built through Ibrahim’s early finish and Ziko’s second-half strike, but Romero’s header gave the defending champions renewed belief.

Messi’s equaliser four minutes later brought the score level and set up a tense finish. Fernandez then delivered the final blow deep into stoppage time, using his head to complete the holders’ recovery.

The 3-2 result means Argentina advanced from the last-16 tie, while Egypt’s campaign ended despite having led by two goals until the 78th minute.
