FIFA Rankings (October 2014): Algeria Reaches Historic 15th, Togo Makes Record Leap
FIFA unveiled its October 2014 rankings on Thursday, and there’s plenty for African nations to celebrate. Algeria continues its continental dominance by achieving a historic 15th place globally — the highest ever for the North African side.
But the headline of the month belongs to Togo, who pulled off a sensational leap of 73 places, climbing from 125th to 52nd in the world and 10th in Africa. This meteoric rise follows back-to-back victories over Uganda in the AFCON 2015 qualifiers, with Emmanuel Adebayor and his teammates turning their campaign around impressively.
Here’s a quick look at Africa’s Top 10 in the October FIFA Rankings:
🇩🇿 Algeria – 15th in the world (Best-ever ranking)
🇨🇮 Ivory Coast – 25th
🇹🇳 Tunisia – 31st
🇨🇻 Cape Verde – 33rd
🇬🇭 Ghana – 35th
🇪🇬 Egypt – 38th
🇨🇲 Cameroon – 40th
🇸🇳 Senegal – 41st
🇳🇬 Nigeria – 42nd
🇹🇬 Togo – 52nd (Up 73 places!)
Other notable rankings include Guinea (55th), South Africa (57th), and Mali (58th), while DR Congo and Congo-Brazzaville are ranked 60th and 62nd respectively.
This month’s update reflects the growing competitiveness of African football, with smaller nations like Cape Verde and Togo making major strides on the global stage.
