FIFA August Rankings: Algeria Maintains Continental Dominance
FIFA released its latest world rankings today, confirming Algeria’s position as the top African football nation. The North African side, known as the Fennecs, remains firmly placed in 24th position globally following their strong showing at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where they reached the round of 16.
Ivory Coast continues to hold second place on the continent, ranked 25th worldwide, while Nigeria rounds out the African top three, occupying 33rd place. Ghana improved its standing by climbing two spots to 36th globally, securing fourth place in Africa. The West African nation is closely followed by Egypt, ranked 38th in the world.
A notable rise is seen in Sierra Leone’s ranking. The Leone Stars, who secured qualification for the group stage of the 2015 African Cup of Nations qualifiers, jumped 14 places to 50th in the world, claiming the seventh spot in Africa.
Cameroon, Burkina Faso, and Senegal complete the rest of the top ten African nations, positioned 8th, 9th, and 10th on the continent respectively.
