FIFA probes possible government interference after Nigeria FA leadership quits

FIFA has asked the Nigeria Football Federation to explain the full resignation of its executive committee, amid concerns that political pressure may have played a part in the upheaval.

The request was made in correspondence signed by FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom. The world governing body is seeking clarification over persistent reports of possible interference by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

If government involvement is confirmed, Nigeria could face sanctions from FIFA.

The development comes as the Nigeria Football Federation confronts a deepening crisis. The organisation’s executive committee resigned in its entirety a few days ago, following widespread criticism of the country’s football administration.

That criticism intensified after the Nigeria women’s national team suffered a poor campaign at the most recent Africa Cup of Nations. The team’s performance prompted voices within the football community to call for changes to the federation’s leadership.

The complete resignation of the executive committee has now drawn FIFA’s attention. Although the departures have taken place against the backdrop of mounting dissatisfaction with the federation, FIFA appears concerned that the decision may have resulted from pressure exerted by political authorities.

In his correspondence, Grafstrom refers to continuing rumours that the Federal Government of Nigeria intervened in the running of the national federation. FIFA has therefore requested further information before determining how to respond to the situation.

The organisation’s rules require national football associations to operate independently, without interference from political authorities. Any finding that the Nigeria Football Federation was subjected to such interference could therefore lead to disciplinary action against Nigeria.

For now, FIFA has not announced any sanction and is awaiting the federation’s response to its request for clarification. The central issue is whether the executive committee’s resignation was an internal decision linked to the crisis surrounding the federation, or whether it followed intervention from the country’s political leadership.
