FIFA President Infantino condemns racist abuse against Ghana’s Antoine Semenyo
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has issued a strong condemnation of the racist abuse targeted at Ghana and AFC Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo during Friday’s Premier League fixture against Liverpool at Anfield.
The incident, which forced a temporary stoppage in the match, has drawn widespread outrage across the football world. Infantino described the abuse as “absolutely unacceptable” and stressed that racism and discrimination have no place in football.
He commended Semenyo for his courage and composure on the pitch, highlighting that his response in the face of adversity stands as a powerful symbol of dignity and resilience for players everywhere.
Infantino also reaffirmed FIFA’s commitment to tackling racism, referencing The Players’ Voice Panel, established following the adoption of five anti-racism pillars at the 2024 FIFA Congress. The panel will continue to support Semenyo directly while ensuring his rights, safety, and dignity are protected.
“Everyone at FIFA, The Players’ Voice Panel, and the entire football community stands firmly with Antoine,” Infantino stated. “We will continue to offer our full support to him, to Bournemouth, the Premier League, and The FA. Strong deterrents must be in place, and meaningful action must follow, to eliminate racism and discrimination from our game.”
This latest incident highlights the urgent need for football authorities, clubs, and law enforcement to go beyond symbolic gestures and ensure real accountability. Football, Infantino reiterated, must remain a global game built on unity, respect, and inclusion.
