FIFA President Gianni Infantino has paid glowing tribute to former Nigerian international Peter Rufai, who sadly passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2025.

In an official condolence message, Infantino expressed his deep sadness and extended sympathies to Rufai’s family, friends, the Nigerian Football Federation, and the entire African football fraternity.

Rufai, one of the most iconic goalkeepers in Nigerian football history, made 65 appearances for the Super Eagles.

He was a key figure in Nigeria’s famous “Golden Generation,” which etched its name into history by winning the country’s second Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in Tunisia in 1994.

Later that same year, Rufai featured prominently as Nigeria made its FIFA World Cup debut in the United States, and he returned for the 1998 edition in France, helping solidify the country’s presence on the world stage.

Known for his commanding presence, sharp reflexes, and calm demeanor, Rufai inspired countless young goalkeepers across Africa.

His leadership and professionalism set a benchmark for future generations.

Gianni Infantino’s message acknowledged not just Rufai’s sporting achievements but also his legacy as a national hero and a beloved figure in world football.

Rufai’s passing is a profound loss. His legacy will endure in the hearts of football lovers around the world. May he rest in peace.
