FIFA President Gianni Infantino has shared his heartfelt condolences following a devastating incident at the 5 July Stadium in Algiers, where three fans tragically lost their lives during MC Alger’s championship celebrations.
In a statement released soon after the incident, Infantino expressed his sympathy and solidarity with the Algerian football fraternity and those mourning the loss.
“I send my most sincere condolences to the victims of the tragic incident that occurred at the stadium during the celebration of the title won by the Mouloudia Club of Algiers in Algiers, Algeria,” Infantino said.
“Sadness invades me at the idea that what should have been a great moment of celebration ends in such a drama.”
The tragedy occurred after MC Alger secured their second straight league title.
Celebrations turned chaotic when a section of fans surged forward, causing a barrier to collapse and leading to a deadly fall from the upper stands.
Over 70 spectators sustained injuries, with several still undergoing treatment.
Infantino reaffirmed the support of the international football community during this sorrowful period.
“On behalf of all members of FIFA and the world football family, we address our thoughts and prayers to the families and relatives of the victims, and we wish the injured a speedy recovery,” he said.
“We also have a thought for all the members of MC Alger and the Algerian Football Federation at this difficult time. May all the victims rest in peace.”
