FIFA names 10 African stars set to shine at 2026 World Cup
The FIFA World Cup has witnessed several unforgettable African stars over the years, with legends such as Roger Milla, Jay-Jay Okocha, Samuel Eto’o, Asamoah Gyan and Papa Bouba Diop leaving lasting memories on football’s biggest stage.
In recent years, Morocco’s historic run to the semi-finals at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar further highlighted the growing strength of African football, with stars like Achraf Hakimi, Youssef En-Nesyri and Azzedine Ounahi capturing global attention.
Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, FIFA has identified ten African players expected to make a major impact at the tournament, which will feature 48 teams and a record 10 African representatives.
South Africa striker Lyle Foster was included on the list after impressing with Burnley. The powerful forward played a key role in the club’s promotion back to the English Premier League and has continued to deliver in the top-flight with goals and assists this season. Foster has also become a key figure for Bafana Bafana, scoring important goals during the qualifiers.
Morocco star Brahim Diaz also earned recognition following his impressive performances for both club and country. The Real Madrid attacker has become an influential figure for the Atlas Lions with his creativity, dribbling ability and versatility in attack, while also shining during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Ivory Coast winger Amad Diallo was named among the continent’s brightest talents after establishing himself as an important player at Manchester United. The left-footed winger has consistently impressed with his pace, direct attacking style and creativity.
Tunisia midfielder Hannibal Mejbri was praised for his composure and ability to control matches from midfield. The former Manchester United youngster, now with Burnley, has developed into one of Tunisia’s most reliable performers since switching international allegiance from France.
Egypt captain Mohamed Salah remains one of Africa’s biggest football icons and is expected to lead the Pharaohs at what could be his final World Cup. The Liverpool legend continues to maintain high standards at both club and international level, carrying the hopes of millions of Egyptian fans.
Cape Verde’s Sidney Lopes Cabral was another player highlighted by FIFA after enjoying an impressive rise in Portugal before sealing a move to Benfica. The versatile wide player has quickly become an important member of the Cape Verde national team.
Senegal captain Sadio Mane also made the list despite now playing outside Europe. The experienced forward remains a decisive figure for the Teranga Lions and played a vital role in helping the West Africans secure qualification for the tournament.
