FIFA hits Esperance star Youcef Belaïli with one-year ban Ahead of Al Ahly Champions League clash
FIFA has reportedly handed a one-year suspension to Algerian winger Youcef Belaïli, dealing a major blow to Espérance Sportive de Tunis ahead of their highly anticipated quarter-final clash with Al Ahly SC in the CAF Champions League.
The world football governing body issued the sanction on Thursday, March 5, 2026, following a legal dispute between the player and his former club AC Ajaccio.
The case stems from Belaïli’s contract termination with the French side during the 2022–2023 season. After leaving the club, the Algerian international reportedly demanded unpaid compensation and other financial dues, submitting documents to support his claim.
However, Ajaccio challenged the submission and escalated the matter to FIFA. The French club’s legal representatives alleged that some of the documents included in Belaïli’s claim were forged, a claim that ultimately led to the disciplinary ruling.
The decision comes at a delicate moment for Espérance, who are preparing to face Al Ahly in a blockbuster CAF Champions League quarter-final tie. The first leg is scheduled for March 13 in Tunisia, while the return leg will take place in Cairo on March 21.
Belaïli has been one of Esperance’s most influential players and remains a key figure for the Algeria national football team. His absence would represent a significant setback for the Tunisian giants as they attempt to overcome the record African champions.
Compounding the situation, the 33-year-old winger has also been working his way back from a serious knee injury after suffering a cruciate ligament tear late last year.
With the crucial Champions League showdown fast approaching, Espérance now face uncertainty regarding one of their biggest stars as they prepare for a difficult encounter against the Egyptian heavyweights.
