Concern is reportedly rising within FIFA over the level of public enthusiasm for the 2026 World Cup, with fears that ticket demand has yet to match expectations.

The upcoming tournament will mark a historic milestone as the first World Cup to feature 48 teams, significantly expanding participation. However, a large number of tickets are still said to be unsold, raising questions about fan engagement just months before kickoff.

According to the Touchline network, the scale of excitement surrounding the competition has fallen short of what was anticipated at this stage. The outlet noted that with only four months remaining until the tournament begins, the overall momentum does not reflect the magnitude of an event of this size.

The 2026 World Cup is scheduled to take place across three host nations, the United States, Canada and Mexico, running from June 11 to July 19.

The opening match of the tournament is set to be played at the Mexico City Stadium, where hosts Mexico national football team are due to face South Africa national football team in the curtain-raiser.
