FIFA fines Cape Verde over fan pitch invasion

FIFA has imposed a fine of 5,000 Swiss francs (around 3.3 million CFA francs) on the Cape Verdean Football Federation after supporters invaded the pitch during the nation’s World Cup qualifier against Cameroon.

The sanction, confirmed in a statement from the Cape Verdean federation dated 25 September 2025, relates to incidents at the Estadio Nacional de Cabo Verde on 9 September.

The Blue Sharks had secured a memorable victory over the Indomitable Lions in the eighth round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, prompting an outpouring of celebrations that spilled onto the field.

Several home supporters entered the pitch immediately after the final whistle, an act FIFA deemed a breach of its safety and security regulations.

The governing body said the behaviour, although celebratory in nature, created risks for players, officials and spectators, and therefore merited disciplinary action.

The Cape Verdean federation acknowledged the decision and confirmed receipt of the fine, noting that FIFA’s disciplinary panel considered the invasion a violation of the organisation’s strict guidelines.

The governing body continues to stress the importance of crowd management and adherence to safety standards, particularly during high-profile international fixtures.

While the financial penalty is relatively modest by FIFA’s standards, it serves as a reminder of the consequences when security lapses occur at international matches.

Cape Verdean officials are now expected to implement stronger preventative measures to avoid repeat incidents, especially as the team remains in contention for a place in the next stage of World Cup qualifying.
