FIFA confirms Iran must play World Cup matches as scheduled despite war concerns

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has affirmed that the 2026 World Cup will proceed as planned, including the participation of all qualified teams, amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding Iran’s national team due to the conflict involving the United States.

Speaking from Zurich during an online FIFA Council meeting, Infantino emphasised the organisation’s commitment to fair play and respect among all participants.

“FIFA looks forward to all teams participating in the World Cup, competing in a spirit of fair play and mutual respect,” he said.

The statement came as Iran requested that its three group stage matches be relocated from the United States to Mexico. FIFA has refused this request, confirming that Iran’s games will remain in Los Angeles and Seattle against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt in Group G.

Infantino acknowledged the broader role of football in times of crisis.

“FIFA cannot resolve geopolitical conflicts, but we are committed to using the power of football and the World Cup to build bridges and promote peace, while our thoughts are with all those affected by ongoing wars,” he said.

With the schedule now confirmed, Iran must adhere to its assigned venues, leaving no room for changes despite the challenges posed by the ongoing conflict.
