Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly have been dealt with a massive blow following an injury setback to star midfielder Emam Ashour.
The 27-year-old, who was forced off during the tightly contested 0-0 draw with Inter Miami, suffered a fracture to his collarbone, ruling him out for the remainder of the group stage.
Due to the severity of the injury, the midfielder has been granted permission to return to Cairo on Sunday evening, ending his participation in the global tournament prematurely.
The decision was taken after medical assessments deemed it necessary for the player to begin his recovery in Egypt.
His absence is a significant blow for Jose Riveiro, who had counted on the dynamic midfielder to anchor the team’s midfield.
The former Zamalek SC player will now focus on his rehabilitation with an eye on returning ahead of the new Egyptian Premier League season, which kicks off on August 8.
Meanwhile, Al Ahly will now have to negotiate for points in the final group match against Portuguese outfit, FC Porto on Tuesday. Following defeat to Palmeiras, The Egyptian giants now has a slim chance of making it out of Group A.
