FIFA Club World Cup: Moghreb Tetouan Eliminated, Auckland City Advance
The 11th edition of the FIFA Club World Cup began on Wednesday in Morocco, but its kickoff went almost unnoticed. And for African fans, it started with disappointment, as Moghreb Tetouan—one of the continent’s two representatives—crashed out in the opening match.
In their first-ever appearance at the tournament, the Moroccan champions were held to a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes by Auckland City of New Zealand in the playoff round. The match was ultimately decided on penalties, where MAT fell 3-4, showing a lack of composure compared to their Oceania opponents.
“It was a very balanced match. Unfortunately, we were unable to control the game as we had hoped and thus dominate our opponent. We did not have many chances. We are eliminated, but despite this defeat, I remain proud of my team and what it showed,” said MAT coach Abdelaziz Amri.
“Our young players, in particular, will come out of this match stronger and will be able to use the experience gained to improve further.”
With Moghreb Tetouan out, Auckland City will now face Algerian side Entente Sétif in the quarter-finals on December 16, aiming to continue their surprise run in the competition.
