A major initiative aimed at improving youth football training in Senegal has been launched through a collaboration between FIFA and the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF).

A two-day seminar in Dakar has brought together key figures from football academies, training centres, and national youth coaching staff as part of FIFA’s global effort to strengthen academy systems.

Senegal is one of five nations selected as pilot countries for this programme, alongside Morocco, the Czech Republic, Canada, and South Korea.

The initiative is designed to elevate the quality of academy structures under FIFA’s guidance, ensuring a more efficient and professional approach to youth development.

Building stronger foundations

David Pauwels, FIFA’s Head of Academy Systems, outlined the project’s key objectives, emphasizing the need for greater coordination.

The goal is to connect, improve the academy system in Senegal and strengthen the link between the FSF, the clubs, and the academies, he said.

Senegalese football has already achieved significant success on the international stage, but FIFA’s involvement aims to reinforce the structural foundations necessary for long-term development.

Pauwels stressed the importance of creating a more sustainable system that allows young talents to progress through a well-organized and competitive framework.

Collaboration and expertise

Mathieu Chupin, president of Dakar Sacré-Cœur, one of Senegal’s leading football academies, welcomed FIFA’s support, describing the initiative as “very important” for local institutions.

He highlighted the crucial role of structured guidance, particularly for privately-run academies that require professional oversight to maximize their impact.

FIFA’s contribution extends beyond financial assistance, offering expertise in organization, management, and training methodologies.

Chupin expressed optimism about the benefits of FIFA’s involvement, particularly in establishing regular youth competitions.

Competitions are essential for young players to reach higher levels,” he stated, reinforcing the need for a structured pathway to professional football.

A long-term vision for Senegalese football

The partnership between FIFA and the FSF marks a significant step in Senegal’s football development strategy.

By fostering stronger academy systems, the initiative aims to create a steady pipeline of talent capable of succeeding at the highest levels.

With FIFA’s backing, Senegal’s young footballers could benefit from improved training environments, greater competitive exposure, and a more structured route to professional careers.

As the project unfolds, it is expected to set a benchmark for youth football development not only in Senegal but across other participating nations, demonstrating the value of strategic investment in grassroots football.
