Ferran Torres holds the key to Barcelona’s next move

Barcelona remain calm over Ferran Torres’ future despite reports linking the Spain forward with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, with the club still intent on renewing his contract.

Torres is entering the final year of his current deal, but Barcelona’s sporting department has no plans to rush into negotiations. Discussions are expected to begin in September, after the player returns from his summer holiday and joins Hansi Flick’s squad for training.

According to Catalan newspaper Sport, Barcelona’s position has not changed. The club continues to regard a contract extension as its preferred outcome, although it will wait until after the summer transfer window has closed before opening talks with the 25-year-old.

Speculation has increased in recent weeks over an alleged preliminary agreement between Torres and Paris Saint-Germain. However, sources inside Barcelona say the club has received no official contact from the French champions.

The same sources also indicate that neither Torres nor his agent has expressed a wish to leave the club. Barcelona therefore believes there is currently no reason to alter its plans or accelerate the process.

The Catalan club has adopted a similar approach with other players who entered the final year of their contracts. Frenkie de Jong and Eric Garcia were not offered immediate renewals, with their respective extensions eventually completed in October and December.

That precedent reflects Barcelona’s belief that contract situations of this nature do not require an immediate decision. The club’s sporting department is comfortable taking time to assess Torres’ intentions and to negotiate within its existing financial framework.

Barcelona considers Torres an important part of its sporting project. It plans to offer him a new contract that reflects both the club’s salary policy and its assessment of his performances.
