Ferran Torres gives Luis Enrique selection dilemma after remarkable PSG start

Ferran Torres scored again as Paris Saint-Germain beat Olympique de Marseille 2-1 at the Stade Velodrome, extending their winning run to three matches in all competitions and giving Luis Enrique a growing selection headache.

PSG controlled possession and the tempo for long periods but struggled to find a decisive final touch. Torres, introduced for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the 59th minute, changed the game seven minutes later.

Desire Doue delivered a precise cross from the left and Torres found space between CJ Egan-Riley and Nayef Aguerd, appearing unmarked six yards from goal before guiding the ball into the top-left corner past Jeffrey de Lange.

Angel Gomes equalised for Marseille in the 72nd minute, but the scores were level for only three minutes before Marquinhos restored PSG’s lead to secure an important victory.

The result is a significant boost for a side that made an uneven start to their Ligue 1 campaign. Torres’ contribution, however, was the latest indication that his arrival from Barcelona in the summer has added a new dimension to PSG’s attack.

Torres matching Ibrahimovic’s early impact

Torres has scored seven goals from his first seven shots on target for PSG in official competitions. Only Zlatan Ibrahimovic had a better scoring start at the club, with eight goals in his first six appearances, according to French publication Foot Mercato.

The Spain forward has quickly established himself as one of PSG’s most effective finishers, despite initially being viewed as another option in a crowded attacking group. He is currently the club’s leading scorer in Ligue 1 this season with four goals.

Torres played down the significance of his statistics after the Marseille match.

“You just have to take your chances. Sometimes you are lucky and score, and sometimes you are not. The only thing to do is keep trying, time and again,” he said.

His performances suggest his efficiency is not based solely on fortune. Torres has shown an ability to find space in the penalty area, read his team-mates’ movement and make the most of limited opportunities.

That creates a difficult decision for Enrique, whose attacking options include Ousmane Dembele, Kvaratskhelia and Doue, as well as players such as Mikel Jauregizar. Torres is also a World Cup winner with Spain and is making it increasingly difficult to regard him simply as an impact substitute.

Enrique said Torres had made an impressive start to life in Paris.

“I am very happy with all our new signings. They all contribute to the team and give us a lot. We need them to continue developing as a team, especially Ferran, who is performing amazingly,” he said.

“Ferran is very strong at attacking the space and uses it brilliantly. When you have players like him in midfield, with the quality to make those passes, it is a great advantage. He is at the top of his game and we are delighted that he joined us.”

Torres’ continued effectiveness means competition for places in the PSG attack is likely to intensify. His seven-minute impact against Marseille and his scoring record have strengthened his case for a larger roleand potentially a starting placein Enrique’s team.
