Fermin Lopez stars as Barcelona find early spark at Mestalla

Fermin Lopez played a decisive role in Barcelona’s strong start against Valencia at Mestalla, setting up Lamine Yamal for the opening goal before scoring the second himself as his influence under Hansi Flick continued to grow.

The midfielder initially operated in an attacking central position but moved to the right wing in the sixth minute. From there, he produced an excellent pass for Lamine Yamal, who converted the opportunity to put Barcelona ahead.

Lopez remained at the centre of Barcelona’s attacking threat in the minutes that followed. He created another chance for his team-mate, although the goal was ruled out for offside after an intervention by the video assistant referee.

The 22-year-old then added a goal of his own in the 22nd minute to double Barcelona’s advantage. He reacted quickest to a rebound inside Valencia’s penalty area after a move involving Anthony Gordon, completing an outstanding opening to the game.

The goal took Lopez’s tally to four for the season, leaving him just two short of the number he managed throughout the previous campaign. His latest effort also brought his total for Barcelona to 13 goals, underlining the increasing attacking responsibility he has taken on within the side.

Lopez’s development has been recognised by both of the managers who have worked with him during this period. Xavi Hernandez previously viewed the player’s progress as a reward for the hard work he had put in during his time with Linares.

Flick has now inherited a player who appears to be becoming increasingly important to Barcelona’s approach. Lopez’s ability to move into different areas, create chances and contribute goals has strengthened his case for a prominent role at the start of the season.

He could even have completed a remarkable individual display before half-time. In the 40th minute, Lopez produced a superb piece of close control in a tight area, beating opponents with a piece of skill reminiscent of Diego Maradona.

However, Valencia goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski and the post combined to deny him a third goal. Dimitrievski made the crucial intervention, while the woodwork ensured that Lopez’s impressive solo moment did not end with another finish.

Even so, his assist, goal and repeated involvement in Barcelona’s attacking play made him one of the outstanding performers at Mestalla. The performance further demonstrated why his role in Flick’s team is becoming more significant as the season progresses.
