Ferjani Sassi Set to Stay at Metz Despite Espérance Interest
Tunisian midfielder Ferjani Sassi is expected to remain at FC Metz, despite strong interest from Espérance Sportive de Tunis and previous reports suggesting a move was imminent.
The 23-year-old, who joined Metz from CS Sfaxien in January 2015, had been heavily linked with a return to Tunisia, with Espérance keen to bring him back before the close of the transfer window. At one point, a deal appeared close, with only a few details left to finalize.
However, Metz head coach José Riga has reportedly vetoed the transfer, insisting on keeping Sassi as the Ligue 2 side seeks promotion back to the top flight. The player had a promising campaign last season in Ligue 1, earning praise for his performances despite Metz’s relegation.
Sassi was also believed to be on the radar of Bordeaux, but that move did not materialize before the European transfer window closed. Frustrated by the prospect of playing in Ligue 2, speculation surrounding a possible switch to Tunisian Ligue 1 has continued.
While a segment of the Metz fan base would prefer to see Sassi leave on loan to Espérance, allowing him regular first-team action and a potential return should Metz secure promotion, for now, the club appears determined to hold onto their Tunisian international.
Sassi’s future may yet be revisited in the January transfer window, particularly if Metz fail to meet expectations in the early stages of the Ligue 2 campaign.
