Fenerbahce hold AS Roma to a draw in UEFA Champions League opener

Fenerbahce and AS Roma shared the points after a closely contested 1-1 draw in their opening UEFA Champions League match.

Roma controlled more of the ball, enjoying 58% possession compared with Fenerbahce’s 42%, but neither side could find a winning goal before the final whistle.

The Italian side took the lead shortly before half-time when B. Cristante broke the deadlock in the 39th minute.

Fenerbahce responded quickly after the interval. Archie Brown levelled the game in the 48th minute, converting the opportunity created by M. Greenwood’s assist.

The second half also featured a significant refereeing decision. At the 69-minute mark, a potential penalty appeal involving Paulo Dybala was overturned following a VAR review.

The result leaves Fenerbahce and AS Roma level with each other in the standings as both clubs begin their UEFA Champions League campaigns.
