Fenerbahce recovered from falling behind twice to beat Liverpool 3-2 in a dramatic UEFA Champions League encounter at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium on Wednesday.
The victory was Fenerbahce’s first in the competition and lifted them to 19th in the league phase table. Liverpool, meanwhile, dropped to fifth after suffering their first defeat in European competition this season.
Liverpool made the stronger start and controlled the early tempo. Victor Munoz missed an early opportunity before the visitors applied sustained pressure, winning a series of corners and forcing Fenerbahce to defend deep.
Their pressure eventually produced the opening goal in the 25th minute. Trey Nyoni found the bottom corner to put Liverpool ahead, but Fenerbahce responded almost immediately.
Only four minutes later, Mason Greenwood levelled the score with an outstanding curling free-kick. The hosts began to grow into the contest as the half progressed and created several promising attacking situations before the teams went into the interval at 1-1.
Liverpool continued to pose a threat from set-pieces after the restart. Alexis Mac Allister came close in the 52nd minute when his header from close range forced a save from Fenerbahce goalkeeper Ederson.
After the hour mark, Andoni Iraola sent on Cody Gakpo, and the change helped Liverpool regain the lead. In the 69th minute, the Dutch forward delivered a precise cross which Alexander Isak met with a powerful header to make it 2-1.
Fenerbahce again responded quickly. Four minutes after Liverpool had moved in front, defender Archie Brown struck a low shot beyond the goalkeeper to bring the home side level for the second time.
Both teams made further substitutions as they searched for the decisive goal, but it was Fenerbahce who found it in the 79th minute.
Substitute Vedat Muriqi connected with a cross from Brown and guided his header expertly past Alisson to complete the comeback. The goal sent the home side in front for the first time and secured a memorable victory over Liverpool.
