Felix Nmecha nears Borussia Dortmund return ahead of Frankfurt clash
Borussia Dortmund have received encouraging news on Felix Nmecha, with the midfielder edging closer to a return to the matchday squad against Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday evening.
The 25-year-old took part in portions of team training on Wednesday and remains under observation as BVB assess whether he can make the bench for the crucial home fixture.
Head coach Niko Kovač reported a generally positive personnel situation ahead of the Frankfurt clash. “Personnel-wise, things are looking good, especially since Karim (Adeyemi), Niki (Süle) and Felix participated in training today – Niki and Felix partially integrated,” he said at his press conference, adding that Thursday’s final session will be decisive. “Tomorrow we have another training session to confirm with Niki and Felix whether they’ll be fit for the weekend or not.”
Despite the optimism, Dortmund are determined not to take major risks with Nmecha in the season run-in, especially with an eye on the upcoming World Cup.
Kovac has already hinted that the Germany international could travel to the tournament even without additional club minutes. “I can well imagine that I might not even bring him on, because he has the qualities to be there even without playing a game at the World Cup,” the coach explained, underlining the club’s cautious approach to his workload.
