Felix Agu sparks full-back battle at Werder Bremen

At Werder Bremen, competition on the flanks is heating up again, and Felix Agu is right at the heart of it.

The 26-year-old is finally fit after persistent ankle and adductor problems and is pushing hard for a starting spot once more. According to DeichStube, a real duel is emerging on the left between Agu and Olivier Deman, who had impressed and nailed down the role during Agu’s absence.

Agu recently reminded everyone of his quality when he came off the bench against Wolfsburg and played a key part in the winning goal, sending a clear message in the internal battle.

Deman, however, has been praised by the hierarchy and remains a trusted first-choice option, while Agu could also be used on the right, increasing pressure on Yukinari Sugawara’s place in the team. “Oli has done really well recently and Felix is also getting back up to speed after his injury,” sporting director Clemens Fritz said, stressing that Werder will need every player until the end of the season.

With Leipzig up next, Deman is still slightly favoured to start, but Agu’s resurgence has turned the full-back positions into a genuine selection headache – in the best possible way for Werder.
