Federico Chiesa rejects Atletico Madrid and Serie A interest to stay at Liverpool

Federico Chiesa has rejected offers from Atletico Madrid and three Italian clubs because he wants to remain at Liverpool and compete for a place under new manager Andoni Iraola.

The Italy forward has attracted interest during the current transfer window despite limited involvement since joining Liverpool. According to Foot Mercato, Chiesa turned down approaches from Atletico Madrid, Roma, Napoli and Como, choosing instead to continue his career at Anfield.

Chiesa believes he can establish himself in Liverpool’s starting line-up and is determined to prove his value to the club. He is also keen to impress Iraola, having struggled for regular opportunities last season under Arne Slot.

The 29-year-old has made 50 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool, but only nine of those have been starts. His lack of consistent playing time has prompted interest from several European clubs, with Atletico Madrid reported to be the most determined to sign him.

Serie A clubs also explored the possibility of bringing Chiesa back to Italy, but the player has resisted those efforts. His preference is to remain in the Premier League and fight for a more prominent role in Iraola’s plans.

Chiesa joined Liverpool in 2024 for €12m, after the club took advantage of the approaching expiry of his contract with his previous team. Since his arrival, he has scored five goals and provided five assists.

His current Liverpool contract runs until the summer of 2028, giving the club control over his future for the next two seasons. However, his record with injuries remains one of the main challenges affecting his progress at Anfield.

Chiesa’s decision comes as Liverpool prepare for the new campaign under Iraola. The club will be seeking to compete for domestic and European honours, while the forward hopes a fresh start under the new manager can lead to more regular first-team football.

Atletico Madrid’s interest represented the strongest challenge to Liverpool’s hopes of retaining the player, while Roma, Napoli and Como also saw an opportunity to take him back to Italy. Chiesa, though, remains committed to earning his place in the Liverpool team rather than pursuing a move elsewhere.

His immediate objective is to convince Iraola that he can become a regular starter. Having endured a difficult season under Slot, Chiesa now believes he has another chance to demonstrate his ability and secure a bigger role as Liverpool begin preparations for the campaign ahead.
