FEATURE: Who is Pape Thiaw? The man who cost Senegal AFCON 2025 glory

Today, the entire nation points to Pape Thiaw and his lack of control as responsible for the CAF stripping the “Lions of Teranga” of their AFCON 2025 title.

The fate of Pape Thiaw is marked by irony: the same man who united Senegal at the 2002 World Cup now divides public opinion after a decision that cost the team the African Cup of Nations title. Losing the AFCON 2025 in the administrative offices not only leaves a gap in the “Lions of Teranga” trophy cabinet, but also raises questions about his ability to lead a top-level national team, where performance on the pitch matters as much as decision-making and control off it.

His playing career

Thiaw was a key figure for the Senegal national team, helping the squad reach the quarterfinals of the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan, where he delivered the unforgettable assist for the “Golden Goal” against Sweden: a backheel that set up Henri Camara and secured Senegal’s progression, a move still remembered today as the “Pape Thiaw Pass”.

At club level, he had a respectable and nomadic career across Europe, playing in France’s Ligue 1 with Saint-Étienne, Metz, and Strasbourg, as well as in Spain with Deportivo Alavés, where he scored 5 goals in the Segunda División and debuted in La Liga, and also with Lorca Deportiva. He also played in Russia with Dinamo Moscow and in Swiss football. For the senior national team, he scored 5 goals in 16 international matches between 2001 and 2003.

From local success to continental chaos

Pape Thiaw built his coaching foundation from the ground up in Senegalese football. He began coaching local clubs, leading ASC Niarry Tally in the Senegalese league before moving to the youth categories of the national team.

His breakthrough came in early 2023 when he made history by winning the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2022), a tournament exclusively for players in local African leagues, defeating Algeria in the final and earning the Best Coach of the Tournament award.

After several years as assistant to Aliou Cissé, he became head coach of Senegal in December 2024, starting strong by qualifying the team for the 2026 World Cup and AFCON 2025. However, his promising start was overshadowed in January 2026 when, in the AFCON 2025 final against Morocco, he decided to pull the team off the field in protest of the refereeing, triggering CAF Article 82, which resulted in Senegal losing the title off the pitch and a five-match personal suspension for “unsporting conduct”.

From 2002 hero to scrutinized strategist

In Senegalese public opinion, his tenure is constantly compared to that of his predecessor. While Cissé was seen as a pillar of discipline, Thiaw’s actions are interpreted by critics as a lack of maturity for the role, arguing that a more experienced coach would have protested without violating the rules that ultimately cost the championship.
