FC Nantes and midfielder Abdoulaye Touré have endured an emotional season following the tragic death of Emiliano Sala. The striker, who had just completed a transfer to Cardiff City in the English Premier League, died in a plane crash over the English Channel on January 21, leaving the football world in shock.
Speaking to L’Equipe, the French-Guinean midfielder reflected on the profound impact of the tragedy, conveying both sadness and admiration for the solidarity shown during that difficult period. “There was this period of searching where the whole group was practically glued to their phones, wondering if we had any more information than the hour before, asking ourselves where he could be. We had the faintest hope that we would find him. The nights were very short,” Touré recalled.
Amid the uncertainty, Touré was struck by the way the Nantes squad came together. “I also saw a wonderful sense of solidarity, which I thought was great considering the image that football can project. People sometimes say we’re a bit selfish, a bit arrogant,” he added. His words underline the human side of the sport, often overshadowed by its competitive nature, highlighting how players can unite in moments of profound crisis.
Even months after Sala’s death, the emotional weight remains heavy. Touré noted that the memory of the tragedy persists in daily life: “It’s difficult because everywhere we go, this image is brought back to mind by a word, a photo, chants. We have hearts, and it still weighs heavily on people’s consciences.” He emphasized that the impact of the loss will not fade quickly, stating that the events of this season will leave a lasting mark: “Two months later, in five or ten years… This season will mark us for life.”
For FC Nantes and their players, the 2018–2019 campaign will forever be remembered as one of sorrow and reflection. Beyond the challenges on the pitch, the tragedy has reinforced the human connections within the team and highlighted the fragility of life, even amidst the world of professional football. Abdoulaye Touré’s candid reflections serve as a poignant reminder of the personal side of the sport and the deep bonds shared between teammates, which can endure even in the face of devastating loss.
The season, while marked by grief, also showcased moments of unity, resilience, and solidarity, qualities that will continue to define Nantes and its players long after the tragedy. For Touré and the squad, Emiliano Sala’s memory remains a profound part of their lives, shaping their experiences both on and off the field.
