Danish giants FC Copenhagen have officially announced the signing of South African international Thapelo Maseko on a four-year contract, bringing an end to his time with Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 22-year-old forward has completed his move to the Danish Superliga side after being released by Sundowns, where his spell at Chloorkop failed to develop as expected.

Maseko joined Sundowns with considerable promise and was regarded as one of the exciting young attacking talents in South African football. However, his time with the reigning South African powerhouse was disrupted by limited opportunities and difficulties in establishing himself as a regular member of the starting XI.

Despite his challenges at Sundowns, Maseko remains highly regarded for his pace, direct running and ability to operate in attacking positions. His qualities have also earned him recognition at international level with Bafana Bafana.

His move to FC Copenhagen now provides the South African with an opportunity to reset his career and make a fresh start in European football.

Copenhagen are one of Denmark’s most established clubs and regularly compete for domestic honours while also featuring in European competitions. The club’s environment could provide Maseko with valuable experience and a platform to further develop his game.

The four-year contract demonstrates the Danish club’s confidence in the South African forward and their belief that he can become an important player for the team over the coming seasons.

For Maseko, the move represents a significant new chapter after what proved to be an underwhelming period at Sundowns. The forward will now be hoping to put his difficult spell at Chloorkop behind him and rediscover the form that made him one of South Africa’s most promising young players.

Maseko’s arrival also strengthens FC Copenhagen’s attacking options as the club prepares for the demands of the new campaign.

After leaving South Africa, the 22-year-old will now face the challenge of adapting to Danish football, a new tactical environment and the demands of competing for a place in Copenhagen’s squad.

The move gives Maseko another opportunity to demonstrate his potential on the European stage and could prove an important step in his ambition to establish himself as a regular at both club and international level.

For Sundowns, meanwhile, his departure brings an end to a chapter that never quite reached the heights expected when the player arrived at Chloorkop. Maseko will now look to make the most of his opportunity in Denmark, with FC Copenhagen providing him with the platform to rebuild his career and potentially become a key figure for one of Scandinavia’s biggest clubs
