FC Copenhagen add South African goalkeeper Jessica Williams to women’s squad

FC Copenhagen have signed South African goalkeeper Jessica Williams, continuing a growing connection between the Danish club and the country following Thapelo Maseko’s move to the men’s team.

Williams, 26, has joined the club’s senior women’s side and will be introduced to supporters on Saturday before Copenhagen’s match against ASA Aarhus.

Her arrival means South Africa now has two players at FC Copenhagen, with one representing the men’s team and the other part of the women’s squad.

Cape Town-born Williams recently impressed during her time with the University of Cape Town. She is already familiar to Romaney Pinnock, Copenhagen’s Women’s Head of Football, who has followed her development closely.

“Jess grew up playing with the boys in one of Cape Town’s roughest areas. Her persistence and drive have made her the player and person she is today,” Pinnock told the club’s media.

“Not only will Jess bring her strong work ethic and experience to our group of FCK goalkeepers, but she will also be inspiring many girls at home to stick to their dreams.”

Williams’s signing comes shortly after Maseko completed his move to Copenhagen’s men’s team. The forward joined from Mamelodi Sundowns last month on a four-year contract after producing an impressive performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The two transfers have given South Africa representation across both senior teams at the Danish club.

While Maseko has moved into the men’s squad after his World Cup display, Williams arrives following her performances for the University of Cape Town and is expected to strengthen Copenhagen’s group of goalkeepers.

Pinnock highlighted not only Williams’s footballing qualities but also the journey that has shaped her career. Her experience growing up playing with boys in one of Cape Town’s roughest areas was cited as evidence of the determination that has helped her reach the professional game.

Her first opportunity to meet Copenhagen supporters will come on Saturday, when the club’s women’s team face ASA Aarhus.

The signing also gives Williams a chance to serve as an example to young girls in South Africa. Pinnock said the goalkeeper’s work ethic and background could encourage others to continue pursuing their ambitions.

FC Copenhagen’s latest South African recruit therefore joins at a significant moment for the club, with Williams becoming the second player from the country to represent the organisation this year after Maseko’s move to the men’s side.
