Despite Victor Valdés’ impressive start to the season, the goalkeeper has expressed his intention to leave FC Barcelona at the end of his contract in June 2014. Faced with physical wear and a desire to explore a new league, Valdés’ decision to depart is considered final and must be respected, as shared by his teammate Gerard Piqué.
Piqué emphasized the need to honor Valdés’ choice and not persist in trying to change his mind. In an interview with the Catalan newspaper La Vanguardia, Piqué stated, “I believe that his decision has been made, and we must respect it; there is no point in insisting.” He also stressed the importance of making the most of Valdés’ presence for the remaining season, acknowledging the goalkeeper’s exceptional performance.
While Valdés has contributed significantly to Barcelona’s stellar run in La Liga, Piqué acknowledged that discussions surrounding the goalkeeper’s abilities have been ongoing. He urged the club to reflect on the Valdés situation, stating, “I think that the Valdés case is a lesson for the future. Victor has always been in the crosshairs, and now that he’s leaving, almost everyone wants to keep him. Sometimes at Barça, we are too critical and too negative.”
