FC Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino provided an update on Lionel Messi’s return, expressing hope that the quadruple Ballon d’Or winner would resume training on January 2. Messi is currently recovering from a tear in his left thigh, which initially indicated a six to eight weeks absence. Martino mentioned that the Argentine forward, along with goalkeeper Victor Valdes, who suffered a ruptured tendon, is expected to join the team in training on January 2.
Martino stated, “During the two training sessions on January 2, we hope to count on all the players, including those who are following a recovery process, as is the case for Victor (Valdes) and Leo.” Messi has been in Argentina for his recovery program, and Martino emphasized that the evolution of the injury is progressing well.
The Barcelona players, who are co-leaders in the Spanish Championship, will resume training between December 30 and January 2 after the end-of-year break. Martino also mentioned that Brazilian forward Neymar would return to Brazil on Thursday due to his suspension for Barcelona’s last match in 2013 against Getafe in the Spanish Championship. Neymar, who scored against Cartagena, has been given additional rest considering his busy schedule since the Confederations Cup.
