Lionel Messi Ordered to Pay €33 Million in Tax Dispute
Lionel Messi, the Argentine star striker for FC Barcelona, has been ordered to pay €32.9 million to the Spanish tax authorities following a lengthy investigation into alleged misappropriation of his image rights revenue.
The tax authorities found Messi liable for tax evasion relating to income generated between 2007 and 2012. Although Messi was cleared of intentional wrongdoing on the grounds that he was unaware of the management of his earnings through tax havens, he has been required to settle the outstanding amount.
The €33 million payment breaks down into €25 million for taxes evaded between 2010 and 2012, a €2.7 million penalty, and an additional €5.7 million for evaded taxes dating from 2007 to 2009.
This resolution brings an end to months of scrutiny over Messi’s financial affairs and highlights ongoing efforts by Spanish authorities to tackle tax avoidance among high-profile athletes.
