The reported salary figure is staggering – a whopping 45 million euros annually for Lionel Messi, according to The Sun. This information, disclosed on Wednesday morning, should be taken with caution given its seemingly excessive and bordering on ridiculous nature.
A few weeks ago, the president of Barcelona expressed, “Messi is the best player in the world, and the best player in the world deserves the best salary in the world.” This sentiment was echoed on Monday evening by Javier Faus, the economic vice-president of the club, who, despite rejecting the idea in December, now supports the notion of providing Messi with a deserving economic treatment.
“Messi was and still is the best player in the world, whatever the trophies say. (…) The president has already said that the best player in the world deserves the best economic treatment,” stated Faus. However, the astronomical salary of 45 million euros may cause frustration among other Barcelona players.
While the real intentions of Barcelona leaders regarding Messi’s contract are yet to be fully understood, Messi is set to play his 400th match in the Blaugrana jersey against Levante, adding another milestone to his illustrious career with the club.
