Fares Ghedjemis credits Riyad Mahrez as he targets Serie A promotion with Frosinone
A breakthrough season with Frosinone Calcio has seen Fares Ghedjemis emerge as one of the club’s key performers, with the winger speaking about his development, ambitions and international experience in an interview with L’Équipe.
The 22-year-old, who has recently been capped by Algeria national football team, has played a central role in Frosinone’s push for promotion from Serie B.
With two matches remaining, the club sit third, level on points with Monza in the second automatic promotion place.
Reflecting on the campaign, Ghedjemis said he was satisfied with his progress but remained focused on the team’s objective.
“The season is going well. I’m happy with what I’m doing. But the main objective is obviously promotion to Serie A. We can no longer hide it,” he said.
Despite his strong individual performances, the winger stressed that collective success remains his priority. “Individually, I never set myself any specific goals.
I always want to be as decisive as possible, but in a collective role; that is to say, being decisive if it doesn’t allow my team to win is less interesting to me. I am a competitor.”
Ghedjemis also highlighted the importance of his role and tactical freedom under coach Fabio Grosso. “The tactical setup helps me a lot. I play on the wing… Fabio Grosso, my coach, gives me a lot of confidence, and that affects my performance,” he explained, adding that early trust from the manager has been key to his form.
Describing his playing style, Ghedjemis said he enjoys taking on defenders and playing directly in attack. He also revealed his influences in the game, naming Riyad Mahrez as his main inspiration.
“The player who really inspired me is Riyad Mahrez. We have a similar profile,” he said, also mentioning Vinicius Junior, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise as players he follows closely.
On the international stage, Ghedjemis spoke about his pride at representing Algeria for the first time. “It was a great source of pride to wear that jersey, to hear the anthem.
It’s the country of my parents, and of my heart, too,” he said, reflecting on his call-up and hopes for future involvement.
He also spoke warmly about Mahrez’s influence within the national team setup. “It’s definitely a great pleasure to play with a player like that, who has inspired me… He truly embodies the role of captain, of big brother. I’ve had the opportunity to talk with him several times, and he’s given me a lot of advice.”
As Frosinone continue their promotion push, Ghedjemis remains focused on finishing the season strongly while aiming to build on his early steps at international level.
