A significant chapter has come to an end for Faneva Andriatsima and the Madagascar national team. After 14 years of dedication and commitment to the Barea, the Ahba FC striker earned his 41st and final cap this Saturday, bringing an emotional close to a long international career defined by perseverance, leadership, and historic achievements.

The veteran forward had already announced his decision earlier in the week during an interview with RFI, explaining that the time had come to step aside and allow the next generation to take over. Reflecting on his journey, Andriatsima emphasized that his objective had always been to help elevate Malagasy football to new heights.

“Three years ago I met the coach (Nicolas Dupuis), my goal was to lead the country to the Africa Cup of Nations and we succeeded. I’ve thought it through carefully, age is a factor and there’s also my club in Saudi Arabia where I’d like to play for another year. So I shouldn’t make one selection too many. I think it’s time for me to turn the page,” he said.

Beyond his interview, Andriatsima confirmed the news publicly through a statement on his Facebook page, making his retirement official. “I have made the decision to no longer play for the national team after the match on November 16th,” he wrote, signaling the end of a long-standing relationship with the Barea jersey.

However, while stepping away from regular duty, the striker left the door slightly open for a possible return if the national team ever required his experience. “We’ll see if the national team needs me in the coming years, I will always be available,” he added, showing that his attachment to the country remains strong despite his retirement.

Andriatsima’s international career mirrors the rise of Madagascar on the African football scene. For many years, the team struggled to make an impact, enduring difficult campaigns and limited recognition. Yet the tide began to turn during the qualifiers for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. With Andriatsima playing a key leadership role, Madagascar secured their first-ever qualification for the continental tournament.

What followed was a historic and unforgettable run. Against all expectations, the Barea advanced to the quarter-finals, earning praise for their resilience and team spirit. That campaign became a landmark moment in the nation’s football history and a personal triumph for Andriatsima, who had devoted more than a decade to the cause.

A former Sochaux player, Andriatsima consistently embodied commitment and professionalism, whether during challenging periods or moments of success. His influence extended beyond goals and appearances, serving as a mentor and symbol of perseverance for younger players.

As he now focuses on his club career in Saudi Arabia, Andriatsima leaves behind a lasting legacy with Madagascar. His 41 caps represent far more than statistics; they tell the story of a player who helped transform his national team’s fortunes and inspired a generation. For the Barea, his departure marks the end of an era, but his contribution to Malagasy football will not be forgotten.
