Fagrie Lakay takes next career step with Al-Ahli move from Cleopatra FC

South Africa striker Fagrie Lakay has joined Libyan club Al-Ahli from Cleopatra FC, completing a move on 12 August 2026.

The 29-year-old centre-forward arrives in Libya after a spell with Cleopatra, where he played during the 2025-26 season. Lakay previously represented the Egyptian side on loan from Pyramids FC during the 2024-25 campaign before returning to Pyramids in June 2025.

Lakay brings experience from domestic and continental football to Al-Ahli, having made 111 Premier League appearances and scored 31 goals, while also registering 15 assists. He has also featured in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup, giving him a record of involvement across major African club competitions.

His most successful continental campaign came with Pyramids during the 2024-25 season, when he won the CAF Champions League. The Cape Town-born forward also lifted the Egyptian Cup with Pyramids in 2023-24 and the Egyptian League Cup with Cleopatra in 2024-25.

Lakay began his senior career with Santos FC before moving to SuperSport United in August 2015. He won the Nedbank Cup twice with SuperSport, in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, and later spent time with Ajax Cape Town and Bidvest Wits.

He joined Bidvest Wits on loan from SuperSport United in January 2019, before returning to SuperSport at the end of that season. Lakay then left SuperSport for Bidvest Wits on a free transfer in July 2019, and later joined Cape Town City after a short period without a club.

Pyramids signed him from Cape Town City in January 2022, beginning a period in Egypt that included his loan move to Cleopatra and his return to Pyramids. He subsequently rejoined Cleopatra in July 2025 before making his latest move across North Africa.

A right-footed forward standing 1.70m tall, Lakay now adds his finishing and extensive African club experience to Al-Ahli’s squad in the Libyan Premier League.

The transfer was completed on 12 August 2026, with Lakay leaving Cleopatra FC to join Al-Ahli.
