The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has responded to the controversies surrounding the omission of Riyad Mahrez and Youcef Belaïli from the national squad for the June fixtures. Coach Vladimir Petkovic’s decision to exclude these key players for the World Cup qualifiers against Guinea (June 6) and Uganda (June 10) has sparked widespread debate.

Said Fellak, the FAF’s Communications and Media Officer, addressed the situation, seeking to clarify the reasons behind Belaïli’s exclusion.

Petkovic had previously stated, “Belaïli is a player with many qualities, but we have many other talented players in the squad.

He also encountered many disciplinary problems.” This statement did not sit well with the president of MC Alger, Belaïli’s current club, who interpreted it as a direct critique of the player’s discipline.

Fellak, during a national television appearance, attempted to set the record straight.

He explained that Petkovic’s comments were misinterpreted and that the absence was primarily due to recent disciplinary issues Belaïli faced with FIFA and his former club Al Ahli, rather than his general discipline.

Fellak implied that the decision was also influenced by sporting considerations, though it remains unclear if these explanations will satisfy Belaïli and his supporters.

Mahrez’s Exclusion Raises Eyebrows

The exclusion of Riyad Mahrez, another pivotal figure, has also drawn significant attention. Petkovic explained, “I included Mahrez in the extended list, but having not received any call from him, I consider that he is not ready to return.”

This marks the second consecutive exclusion for the former Manchester City star, who was also absent from the squad in March.

Mahrez responded pointedly on social media platform X: “I have neither received a call from the coach nor from the federation. (…) It was important to me to be present, I obviously respect the choice of the coach but I take note of this decision.”

Implications for the Team

The absence of Mahrez and Belaïli from the upcoming qualifiers leaves the Algerian team without two of its most experienced and talented players.

Both have been central figures in the national squad, with their skill and leadership contributing significantly to past successes.

As the FAF and Petkovic navigate these controversies, the team must prepare to face Guinea and Uganda without these star players.

The decisions have undoubtedly stirred the football community in Algeria, highlighting the challenges Petkovic faces in maintaining squad harmony and performance.

Looking Ahead

The controversies underscore the delicate balance required in team selection, particularly in a football-crazed nation like Algeria.

As the qualifiers approach, the FAF will hope that the remaining squad members step up to fill the void left by Mahrez and Belaïli, and that the team can focus on securing crucial points in their bid for the 2026 World Cup.

These developments will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike, as they reflect broader issues within the team dynamics and management strategies.
