Fadlu Davids: Former Raja coach wants ambitious project with CAF competition target

South African coach Fadlu Davids says he is looking for an ambitious project that can compete in African club competitions as he continues his search for a new job.

Davids has been without a club since leaving Moroccan side Raja Club Athletic in June.

The 45-year-old has spent the past three years working outside South Africa, enjoying spells with Tanzanian giants Simba SC and Raja, where he had two separate stints before taking charge as head coach.

With his next move yet to be decided, Davids has revealed the type of challenge he wants to take on.

Speaking on the Stadium Al Mahwar programme with Khaled El Ghandour, Davids said he would ideally like to lead a club competing in either the CAF Champions League or CAF Confederation Cup.

However, he stressed that the overall vision and ambition of the club would be more important than immediate qualification for continental competition.

“I want to be in the CAF Confederation Cup or CAF Champions League, but the most important thing for me is the project itself, even if the vision is to reach these competitions next season,” Davids said.

“I want an ambitious project with an ambitious club that aligns with my ambitions and coaching philosophy.”

Davids has built significant experience in African club football in recent years.

His work with Simba and Raja has given him exposure to continental competition, while his latest spell in Morocco ended after he helped guide Raja during the 2024-25 season.

The South African is now waiting for an opportunity that matches his coaching ambitions, with a project capable of competing at the highest level of African club football appearing to be his preferred destination.
