Fabio Capello’s desire to continue as Russia’s coach until 2018, coinciding with the year the country hosts the Football World Cup, is on the verge of realization. The Russian Minister of Sports, Vitali Mutko, has disclosed that the Italian coach is set to sign a new four-year contract “before the draw for the final phase” of the 2014 World Cup.
Mutko stated, “I can confirm that there is a preliminary agreement between the coach and the Russian Football Federation,” revealing that the negotiations are at an advanced stage.
This upcoming contract extension for Capello is a testament to the positive impact of his work since taking charge of the Russian national team in 2012, succeeding Dick Advocaat. Under Capello’s guidance, Russia secured direct qualification for the 2014 World Cup, edging out Portugal in the process. The imminent contract renewal reflects the faith and acknowledgment of Capello’s contributions to Russian football.
