Fabian Ruiz believes his success with Paris Saint-Germain and Spain makes him a strong contender for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, but admits several rivals produced outstanding individual seasons.
The 30-year-old midfielder enjoyed an exceptional campaign, helping Paris Saint-Germain win the Champions League before contributing to Spain’s World Cup triumph.
Those achievements have earned Ruiz a place among the 30 nominees for the prestigious award, with the Spanish international hoping to improve on the 24th position he finished in last year’s voting.
Speaking to French newspaper L’Equipe in an interview reported by Foot Mercato, Ruiz said being included on the shortlist was an honour in itself.
“Being among the 30 nominees is a great honour for me,” he said. “I hope the members of the Ballon d’Or jury vote for the player who deserves it most, because simply being among the nominees is an honour in itself.”
He added: “I am grateful for their confidence in me and for being included on this list. For a footballer, I believe the Ballon d’Or is a wonderful and important award, and I hope to achieve the best possible position this year.”
Ruiz did not seek to diminish the claims of his competitors, despite his impressive collection of team honours. He acknowledged that a number of players had delivered exceptional performances individually during the season.
“In terms of trophies, I do not think anyone performed better than me,” Ruiz said. “But individually, there were players who had wonderful seasons. We have no doubts about their level.”
“It is good that Europe has players of such a high standard, and that there are so many candidates to win this award. To be one of them is a great honour and a source of immense pride for me.”
The midfielder also addressed the three-month absence he suffered during the season and whether it could damage his chances of winning the Ballon d’Or.
Ruiz believes his availability during the most important matches could prove more significant than the time he spent out injured.
“Fortunately, I was on the pitch during the decisive moments of the season and played an important role for Paris Saint-Germain and the national team,” he said. “Therefore, I do not think my absence will affect the Ballon d’Or selection.”
Ruiz finished 24th in the 2025 Ballon d’Or voting, his best placing to date. After a year that brought major honours at both club and international level, he is now aiming to make a significant rise in the standings despite the strong competition from the leading players in world football.
