Exeter City sign Scotland and Zimbabwe midfielder Ethan Sutherland on loan

Scotland and Zimbabwe midfielder Ethan Sutherland has joined Exeter City from Wolves U21 on loan, completing a move from Premier League 2 to League Two.

The 20-year-old left midfielder joined Exeter on 10 August 2026 and has signed a contract running until 31 May 2027. The agreement is recorded as a loan transfer, with no fee disclosed for the move.

Sutherland arrives at St James Park after spending the previous part of his career with Wolves’ under-21 side. His move takes him from the Premier League 2 set-up into Exeter’s senior League Two squad, providing the club with a player whose preferred role is on the left side of midfield.

Born on 25 April 2006, Sutherland is eligible to represent both Scotland and Zimbabwe. He stands 1.89 metres tall and favours his left foot, attributes that form part of his playing profile as he begins his time with Exeter.

The transfer represents a change in level and setting for Sutherland, who now joins an Exeter team competing in England’s fourth tier. His previous club, Wolves U21, operates in Premier League 2, the competition for Premier League clubs’ development teams.

Exeter have therefore added a young, left-footed midfielder to their squad through a temporary deal, while Sutherland has secured a move away from Wolves’ under-21 structure. The contract details confirm that his stay with the Devon club runs through the end of May 2027.

Sutherland’s arrival was completed on 10 August, with Exeter becoming his current club and Wolves U21 his immediately previous side. The move is a loan, and he will wear Exeter’s colours during the term of the agreement.

The 20-year-old now begins his Exeter City spell after switching from Wolves U21.
