The Togo Coaches Association has reason to celebrate following the announcement of the shortlist for the national team coach. Two local coaches have made it to the final selection, marking a significant step in the advocacy for the recruitment of a homegrown manager.
The Joint Technical Committee for the Study of National Coach Applications and Contract Drafting, which has been tasked with reviewing applications for the head coach role, released its initial findings on Friday. Out of the thirty or so candidates who applied, five names have been shortlisted, including two Togolese coaches. The final decision on Togo’s new coach is expected soon.
Among the five shortlisted candidates, Tchakala Tchanilé, the former assistant coach of the national team, is one of the local coaches who has made the cut. Tchanilé’s experience and prior involvement with the national setup give him an edge as he aims to lead Togo to new heights.
Additionally, Jean-Paul Abalo, a former Togolese international who currently resides in France, is also believed to be on the shortlist. Abalo, who had a solid career as a defender with Amiens, may bring a fresh perspective despite his relatively limited coaching experience. Several members of the technical committee reportedly favor Abalo, though this information has neither been confirmed nor denied officially.
The decision to include two local coaches on the shortlist comes after the Togo Coaches Association’s strong push for a homegrown manager. With both Tchanilé and Abalo representing Togo’s footballing heritage, the committee’s choice could pave the way for local talent to take charge of the national team.
The final appointment of Togo’s head coach is expected to be made soon, with the country’s footballing future hanging in the balance as it prepares for upcoming competitions.
