[Exclusive] Thibault Klidje: “I have big ambitions”

At just 18 years old, Thibault Klidje has already experienced a remarkable journey in football. From competing in major African club competitions to attending training camps with Togo’s national team, the Hawks, and participating in the prestigious Maurice Revello Tournament, his early career has been intense and eventful. Yet it was only recently that the young Togolese striker signed his first professional contract, committing to Girondins de Bordeaux until June 2023. In his first exclusive interview following the signing, Klidje opened up about his emotions, struggles, ambitions, and inspirations.

Joining Bordeaux, a historic French club crowned national champions in 2009 and known for its European campaigns, represents a major milestone. Klidje describes the move as an honor and a privilege, particularly given the opportunity to work with high-level coaching staff and access top-class facilities. However, he remains grounded. For him, signing the contract is only the beginning. His immediate objective is to adapt quickly, earn his place within the squad, and eventually step onto the pitch at the Matmut Atlantique to make the club’s supporters proud.

The road to this achievement was far from smooth. Only months ago, Klidje found himself at the center of a dispute between agents. He endured significant pressure and intimidation, compounded by the painful loss of his father during the same period. At one point, the emotional toll nearly pushed him to abandon football altogether. After successfully completing a trial with Bordeaux in May 2019, he returned home expecting clarity about his future. Instead, he was told he would have to sign for TP Mazembe against his will, while negative rumors circulated in the media. His French representatives eventually withdrew due to the escalating conflict, leaving him feeling isolated.

Relief came through an opportunity in Brazzaville, where he spent several months in a calmer environment. A signing bonus enabled him to support his family and distance himself from the turmoil. With the help of his French lawyer, Klidje ultimately secured his move to Bordeaux. The ordeal taught him a hard lesson about the complexities of football representation, an experience he hopes no other young player has to endure.

Choosing Bordeaux was deliberate. Klidje values development over haste and believes progressing through the reserve team will better prepare him for top-level football. Though aware that expectations are high given his international exposure, he prefers to focus on steady work and continuous improvement rather than external pressure.

Ambitious and determined, Klidje dreams of a long and impactful career. As a striker, his primary objective is simple: score goals. He aims to refine his finishing, increase his training intensity, and become a regular starter with the reserves before earning a chance in Ligue 1. Ultimately, he hopes to become a key figure for Togo’s national team and help his country shine internationally.

Quick, direct, and fearless in front of goal, Klidje identifies with Kylian Mbappé and Sadio Mané, drawing inspiration from their mentality and talent. One day, he hopes not only to emulate them but perhaps even share the pitch with them.
