Womé Dové and Mamelodi Sundowns Clinch South African Premier Division Title
Mamelodi Sundowns have officially secured the South African Premier Division title following a commanding 3-0 victory over SuperSport United on Tuesday evening. With just one round of matches remaining, the Pretoria-based outfit now boasts a four-point lead over closest challengers and reigning champions Kaizer Chiefs—making them uncatchable at the summit.
For Togolese international Womé Dové, the triumph marks a career milestone. Now in his third season in South African football, the midfielder has played an integral role in his team’s success and couldn’t hide his elation when speaking to Africa Top Sports.
“It’s a great joy for me, as this is my third season here in South Africa and I deserve a cup,” Dové said. “It was a long road for us but we achieved the goal we set with my new club.”
Nicknamed “The Brazilians” due to their iconic yellow kits and fluid playing style, Mamelodi Sundowns capitalised on a series of stumbles from Kaizer Chiefs in recent weeks. With the Soweto giants dropping crucial points in back-to-back games, Sundowns seized the opportunity by stringing together an impressive run of 10 consecutive victories—ultimately overtaking the defending champions at a critical stage of the season.
“The defending champions needed to draw two matches to see us take the lead, making it 10 wins in a row,” explained Dové. “We constantly put pressure on the leaders by focusing on our match. We believed and knew that in football, anything is possible.”
Dové’s tactical awareness, midfield composure, and ability to link defence and attack proved pivotal as Sundowns surged to the top of the table. His performances have not only helped earn his team a spot in next year’s CAF Champions League but have also reignited interest in his services abroad.
With the domestic season now drawing to a close, the 26-year-old Sparrowhawk says he is ready to evaluate his future and consider a move to Europe—provided the right opportunity arises.
“I was just waiting for this title to decide my future. Now that I’ve won it, I’m thinking of going to Europe, if I get any interesting offers,” Dové revealed. “But everything will depend on my club, because I’m tied to my club for two years.”
As Mamelodi Sundowns celebrate their latest league triumph and prepare for continental competition, Dové’s future remains an intriguing subplot. Whether he remains in South Africa or secures a transfer abroad, his contribution to this historic season has already left a lasting impression.
The Togolese midfielder’s story is one of persistence, professionalism, and reward—and his title win with Sundowns may just be the springboard to the next chapter in a blossoming career.
