Ex-Zimbabwean striker Abbas Amidu jailed for 12 years in drug crackdown

Former Zimbabwean striker Abbas Amidu has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for involvement in illegal drug trafficking, alongside fellow ex-footballer Reuben Kudzai Mhlanga.

Amidu, who has been without a club since leaving Egyptian Second Division side Baladiyat El Mahalla SC in July 2020, has not officially retired but has been inactive for more than five years, casting doubt over any return to professional football.

During his career, Amidu played for Kaizer Chiefs and Black Leopards, while Mhlanga also enjoyed a notable presence in Zimbabwean football.

Both were apprehended in October 2025 after police impounded their vehicle, reportedly carrying dagga. They were formally sentenced on 24 February 2026 for dealing in dangerous drugs.

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police said:

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that crime does not pay. This follows the arrest, conviction and sentencing of two former soccer players, Tumai Matsika (Abbas Amidu)and Kudzai (Reuben) Mhlanga for dealing in dangerous drugs (dagga).

“The two appeared in court on 24th February 2026 for sentencing and were each sentenced to 12years’ imprisonment.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police applauds members of the public for their continued cooperation and support in the fight against crime.”

Career Overview: Abbas Amidu

Amidu’s rise in football began at Aces Youth Academy, the same academy that produced stars like Knowledge Musona and Khama Billiat.

He earned a move to the South African Premier League after a successful trial in early 2012, arriving at Kaizer Chiefs with a reputation as a prolific goalscorer, having netted 12 goals for Black Mambas FC the previous season.

However, persistent injuries prevented him from making an official appearance for Amakhosi, leading to his departure just months later.

He revived his career with Black Leopards, where he featured in over 20 matches, scoring four goals and providing two assists.

Amidu later had stints across the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, but despite his talent and international experience at youth level for Zimbabwe, his conviction now casts a shadow over what was once a promising career.

This case marks a stark and tragic turn for a player once hailed as one of Zimbabwe’s brightest footballing prospects.
