Ex-Morocco coach Walid Regragui not interested in vacant Ghana coaching job
Former Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has ruled himself out of contention for the vacant Black Stars job, according to sources familiar with the situation.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has been in the market for a new head coach since parting ways with Otto Addo on Monday, March 31, following a string of disappointing results. Ghana suffered a 5-1 defeat to Austria in Vienna before falling 2-1 to Germany in international friendlies as part of their build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Early reports indicated that the GFA had engaged Regragui in discussions, hoping to convince him to take over the national team.
However, those talks have reportedly ended, with the Moroccan tactician informing Ghanaian football authorities through his representatives that he is not interested in the role.
Regragui remains one of the most respected coaches on the global stage after leading Morocco to a historic semi-final appearance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar—the first African nation to reach that stage.
His tactical discipline and structured approach have made him a sought-after figure, with recent links to several high-profile jobs, including a potential move to replace Hervé Renard after his exit from the Saudi Arabia national team.
Despite Regragui’s withdrawal, the Black Stars coaching position continues to attract top names. Former Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah, as well as Pitso Mosimane, Tom Saintfiet, and Hervé Renard, are among the figures reportedly under consideration as the GFA evaluates its next move.
Ghana will return to action in June with friendly matches against Mexico and Wales as preparations intensify for the World Cup.
The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L, where they will face England, Croatia, and Panama at the tournament, set to kick off on June 11 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
