Former Ghanaian winger Laryea Kingston has placed Michael Essien ahead of Thomas Partey in the ongoing debate about the country’s greatest midfielder.
In an interview with Joy Sports, Kingston praised Partey’s abilities but highlighted Essien’s exceptional career, particularly his achievements with Chelsea, as the deciding factor in his preference.
“They all have their strengths and weaknesses, but for me, I think I was really, really privileged to play alongside Michael Essien,” Kingston said.
He elaborated on Essien’s impact, saying, “We all know what he did at Chelsea when they had a fantastic team, a very strong team. He was a regular in the team, playing week in, and week out.
“Partey has his strengths and has done very well, but for me, Michael Essien was something else,” he added.
Essien, who retired in 2020, enjoyed a storied career with clubs like Chelsea, Real Madrid, and AC Milan. His accolades include a UEFA Champions League title, Premier League trophies, and several FA and League Cups.
Meanwhile, Thomas Partey has established himself as one of Arsenal’s key midfielders. His honours include a La Liga title, the UEFA Super Cup, and the UEFA Europa League.
